Support Information for U.S. Census 2010

The Twenty-third United States Census, known as Census 2010 or the 2010 Census, is the current national census in the United States. National Census Day was April 1, 2010 and is the point of reference date used in filling out the form.[1]

The questions asked on each census are based on current conditions and vary.  The data collected is protected by law.  While summary data is made available for use by a wide variety of agencies, the detailed personal information is held on a strictly confidential basis.  No ties to the data and the personal information collected are shared with any other agency.

The U.S. Census Bureau has developed a wide range of support information in various media formats to help people understand the purpose of the census and how it works.

As usual, scams have cropped up.  The best source of data about the census is the official 2010 Census Website.

Blogging--Purpose of this Blog

Someone spoke about my blog this morning and I wanted to think again about its purpose.  One of my goals is to begin publishing books and the discipline of writing a daily blog was intended to be a "baby step" toward publishing--the blog and beyond.

I mention the purpose of this blog in both my first post and in the header that appears with every post (see below).
(Click on the image to see it completely and bigger.  It is the same as the comment appearing at the top of this page.)

The content of my blog posts is eclectic, reflecting my thoughts, observations, or reflections of the moment.  Overall the focus is on helping readers navigate the world with a few more insights and resources.  I maintain current links in the posts so that people can get back to source information.

It is a business and a personal post in that many of the topics are business related and all are influenced by my personal reflection, experience, and sense of values.  This is post number 224 and I expect to turn the posts into a book soon.  The question is, should I wait for a year of posts or do it earlier?  I also need a way to organize the posts by themes and to make sure that the links remain alive in the electronic version of the book I expect to publish.

Success Comes from Small Choices for Positive Action

We make small choices every day that lead to the harvest we experience in our lives on a daily basis.  We often make these choices without thinking.  Should I stay in bed just five minutes more in the morning?  Should I show my family I love and value them as I run out the door to work or to school?  Should I use my time wisely in traffic?  Should I exercise in ways that promote the health of my body?  Should I eat in ways that promote the health of my body?  What is my purpose?  Is the work I do aligned with my purpose?  If not, what should I do about that?

I enjoy water aerobics and, more recently, aqua pilates.  I try to get to the indoor pool every day for some healthy exercise.  I'm also watching what I eat, making more healthy choices--though not yet at 100%.  Recently I had an opportunity to look at some work opportunities that were not fully aligned with my purpose in life and was able to redirect my action away from opportunities that go against my values.

Public or Private? Which Makes Most Sense?

In creating some MP4 videos using TechSmith's Camtasia software, I decided to post some publically on YouTube--with back-ups on TeacherTube in case of firewall problems with YouTube.

It is a real question--whether or not to give the public access to some of the information we may want to share with others.  How many others?  For what purpose?

One of my videos is of a presentation I made called Using Audio Books to Improve Reading and Academic Performance.  That's the video I was working on yesterday.  It's up today on my website at http://www.joelmonty.net/education/education.htm.  (My computer may have been multitasking while I was making the video, so I'll have to double check to make sure that the audio is well synchronized with the video throughout.)  I may try to put that video on TeacherTube later because I want as many teachers to access the presentation as possible.  The information is important.

That's a major key for me to keep in mind.  Who do I want to have access to material I make available and why?  What do I need to do to preserve my privacy and copyright on the materials I share?  Both of these are decisions to be made on a daily basis.

I have another research paper recently published that I need to turn into a presentation.  It is about working with "reluctant" English language learners (ELLs) and encouraging them to produce higher quality in the classroom.  I'd like for that to be a video on TeacherTube as well.

It's amazing how many hours are required to keep these things going and available for others to make use of.

Getting Read--RSS Feeds--Why Promote a Blog?

Why would I want anyone else to read this blog?  What difference could it make?  What is an RSS (Real Simple Syndication) link and service.  Why should I promote this blog?

Those were questions I answered for myself before starting this blog.  I do want others to read the blog posts.  I write things I think are important memory joggers or insights that I want to share with others who may want to read them.  One way to make that an easy process--for people to get the updates--is to have people subscribe to and RSS feed--Real Simple Syndication.  I've just added the "gadget" to this blog to make it easy for people to subscribe to posts, comments, or both.  http://www.bloglines.com is a good source for managing subscriptions.  This allows readers or "followers" of the blog to be notified automatically when something changes on the blog.

So, why should I promote the blog?  One of my goals is to make a positive difference in the world--for everyone I contact and touch.  This is another way to reach out and touch someone.  These reflections, ideas, and insights I have found to be valuable in my own life and I want to share them with others who may want to read them.  Could it help for my business?  Perhaps, if someone who needs the kinds of things I offer and begins to trust me by reading my blog posts, they can find ways to contact me and we can do business.

I have had the same goal for 40+ years as a professional, to make a positive difference in the world by helping people and organizations learn to change in order to improve their quality of (business) life now and for the future.  Want to help me do this?  Subscribe to my blog via an RSS feed and share it with others.

I don't have many comments to my blog posts yet, though some friends care enough to read my blogs and to give me feedback--including finding some typographical errors I can come back and correct.  Thanks for the feedback and corrections, by the way.  Part of delivering value is to have the blogs spelled correctly and make sense.

While I am fluent in more languages than English, I write better in English, so the blog posts are in my native language.  My apologies and congratulations to English language learners (ELLs) who have learned to read English as a second (or additional) language.
